This is a collection of essays on the structural features of Indian society � its enduring social groups, institutions and processes like caste, tribe, sect, rural�urban relations, sanskritization, and purity and pollution. It takes a critical look at the prevailing thinking on these structures and the direction in which they are changing in modern times. It views them in relation to kinship, marriage and religion, giving special attention to the role of urban centres, past and present. Several national-level issues such as the definition of Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Other Backward Class, the policy of reservation, the reliability of censuses and surveys of castes and tribes, the abolition of untouchability, the growth of organized religion, and secularization are also analyzed in the context of their social matrix. Based on fieldwork as well as archival material, the book views Indian society in a historical as well as contemporary perspective. As against the overwhelming emphasis on the hierarchical dimension of castes and tribes, the focus here is on their horizontal dimension: how every caste�s and tribe�s population spreads over villages and towns; how their internal organization and differentiation is based on networks of kinship, marriage, patron�client relationships and leadership; and the role of endogamy vis-a-vis hypergamy in maintaining their boundaries.
